Acupuncture Information and Practitioner Databases

The American Academy of Medical Acupuncture links to articles and physicians and osteopaths who have studied acupuncture through the UCLA training system developed by Joseph Helms, M.D.

The National Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine lists all of the diplomates of acupuncture, Chinese herbology, and Oriental bodywork

The American Association for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine maintains a database of its acupuncture practitioner members

The Kiiko Matsumoto Style of Acupuncture site lists many practitioners who have learned to apply the techniques of this very influential teacher and practitioner of Japanese acupuncture and moxibustion. There is also a list for those living outside the United States.

Observing Ms. Matsumoto at her seminars and applying her insights into the use of needles and moxa, I can say without any hesitation that her practice exists at the leading edge of this complex mixture of art and science. I traveled all over the U.S. and Canada to attend her seminars, and her influence on my practice and perspective has been monumental.

People who contact my office from all over the world sometimes ask if there is anyone I would recommend for them to see for treatment, and the answer is always: Kiiko Matsumoto.

So, if you can marshal the resources to make it to her practice or arrange to be seen by her at one of her seminars (Ms. Matsumoto consults and treats patients at her teaching seminars to illustrate her lineage of treatment.), learn more here.

Gancao also has an extensive database of practitioners as well as articles of interest to practitioners and the public. Also listed below

Information on Chinese Herbal Medicine and Acupuncture

Blue Poppy Enterprises Bob Flaws has championed the cause of understanding Chinese herbal medicine and zhen-jiu (acupuncture and moxibustion) in a fashion that clarifies communication between practitioners and facilitates peer review, emphasizing a logical and therapeutically applicable interpretation of the most widely used system in mainland China. Diagnosing within the Chinese system and confining oneself to the genuine Chinese concepts and language is the central pillar of his perspective.

Ideally, every practitioner should at least know some medical Chinese language and certainly should understand that when "Westernization" of Chinese diagnoses, such as "yin fire", are made, a great deal is lost in translation.

One of the greatest weaknesses of the present "balkanization" of Oriental medicine into various Western subspecialties is the loss of a fundamental education in the classic concepts and texts of Chinese medicine, and at least some attempt to think as a Chinese physician would.

Blue Poppy publishes tremendous resources for patients and practitioners at very reasonable prices. Mr. Flaws is also a practitioner in Boulder, Colorado.

Gancao This site has a very extensive listing of practitioners and links, as well as a variety of articles, web links, forums, and information on ongoing activities among practitioners and students

The Institute for Traditional Medicine was a pioneer in the field of investigation into the botanical compounding of Chinese Medicine. Even more important are the efforts the founder, Subhuti Dharmananda, Ph.D., has made to improve the understanding of practitioners regarding the precision of Oriental prescribing.

My first formal study of these systems was through Dr. Dharmananda, and we later traveled and studied together in Tibet and China and Hong Kong.

His knowledge is encyclopedic, and his efforts to raise the standards of Chinese medicine indefatigable. ITM has also created unique and valuable contributions to Chinese therapeutics, and their formulations are of the highest quality.
